Classes Offered at Sugar Land Dance Center

Creative Movement (ages 2 to 3)
This is a 30 minute parent/child class that gently introduces toddlers to a structured dance class. Parents are there for the comfort of their child and participate less and less as the class progresses. This class develops gross and fine motor skills, basic Ballet steps, and the confidence to explore dance without the security of a parent in the room.

Creative Dance (ages 3 and 4)
This is a 45 minute class designed to prepare the young dancer for Ballet. This class develops gross and fine motor skills, basic Ballet and dance movements, and rhythm as students learn to use their imagination as it relates to dance. Children in this class must be potty-trained.

PreBallet / Tap (ages 5 and 6)
This is an hour long class that introduces the student to the ballet barre and the more complex rhythm and coordination in tap dancing. This class gently teaches proper form while allowing the child to delight in the joy of dance.

New! Princess Dance Classes (age 18 months to 5 years)
Similar to the other programs for these ages, but with a little more whimsy. Great for children just discovering dance!

Ballet
Ballet dancing is considered the mother of all dance forms. The grace, poise and agility that comes from ballet training gives dancers skills that carry over into everyday life. These classes range from 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours depending on the level. Our Ballet curriculum is a graded syllabus developed by the staff of SLDC. Dancers are placed in class according to age and ability.

Tap
Tap dancing is a wonderful way to develop rhythm and timing. These classes range from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the level. Our Tap curriculum is a graded syllabus developed by the staff of SLDC. Dancers are placed in class according to age and ability.

Jazz
We offer many different levels for all ages and abilities. Jazz styles range from funky to Fosse to lyrical and require a strong knowledge of technique. It is strongly recommended that students with no Ballet background take Ballet to strengthen their technique. These classes range from 30 to 1 1/2 hour depending on the level.

Pointe
We begin considering students for pointe at age 11-12. To be eligible, the dancer must have enough strength in her feet, ankles, and legs to hold her placement while dancing “en pointe” and her feet must be fully developed. Pointe students are required to take class at least three times a week (summer included).

Lyrical and Modern (age 12 and up)
A combination of ballet, jazz and modern styles. A ballet background is required or students will need to take ballet concurrently.

Hip Hop (ages 9 and up)
Urban street jazz popular in music videos. A jazz background is very helpful but not required.

Ballroom, Latin, and Swing
All of the popular partner dances are taught to individuals and couples in the form of private lessons and group classes. Monthly practice parties are held so that students may use their new skills under real-life conditions.
